Earthquake-proof Foam House
January 27th, 2005 | Filed under: Building Tech, News | 38 Comments »
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS), recently tested the stability of structures built with the combination of expanded polystyrene (foam), and cement board. This method of building maintains the rigidity needed, yet remains lightweight, so it can withstand earthquakes of magnitude 10. Remarkably, the structure doesn’t require any wood members to create a rigid frame. FAS is in the process of using this method to build an ‘elegant home’ .

I am a student in the 8th grade *&* we are researching on earthquake proof houses. We made a model house made from toothpicks *&* marshmellows. each team had a different base. We came to a conclusion that bed rock was the BEST to build on. Sand however is the WORST because the grains of sand do not stick together.
i think it is a great idea

my class is doing a project on earthquake proof houses.were can i found a good website on that area of erathquake proof houses
what are they thinking? You cannot build a house out of foam, those fucking nutters are crazy
Earthquake of 8th October 2005 in Pakistan has challanged to the Architects and engineers to modify the design of houses accordingly. No standard design has so far come to the surface for implimentataion specially the earth quake affected area. I am engineer and have made an effort to design units of 2 bed room and 3 bed room houses to sustain in the earth quake at the rectar scale of 8. It is a light weight and is safe for life even for greater dishaster. It is comfortable for hot and cold season and can be dismentalled and shifted to any other place with out much wastage of mterial. House will be built in Pakistan in next couple of months for demonstration. Cost varies with the type of material used for internal finish and the services provided.Interested persons/parties can contact on above e-mail address or Mobile 00923005113117

I really need to know when anybody will ever live in one
how many will be built
There are already many people living in these home throughout the U.S. and in several other countries. The company has been in existence for a long time. They first madet the panels with OSB skins. There are many companies throughout the U.S. that still use that technology. What makes this system stand out is that they use fibered cement board skins that hold up much better to the elements as they won’t rot, mold, host insects such as termites and eliminate many steps in the construction process. FAS expects this to become the new paradigm for building in the near future because of its many advantages, earthquake resistance being just one.
this web site needs a diagram on how to make your home earthqauke safe
