Scan my Brain & Tell me What I See

Current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) devices scan and highlight areas of the brain which are active. Frank Tong has shown that his technique of statistical inference give these scanning devices a new layer of resolution; enough to read the orientation of columns, which in the case of Tong’s experiments provided information to what the subject sees. The research also shows that areas of the primary visual cortex show processed information that is hidden from the subject’s consciousness. Tong’s technique could eventually be applied to all areas of the brain to help unravel its mysteries.
